The school is part of the Chinese Ministry of Education’s Project 211, and a Jiangsu provincial key comprehensive university. The School of Humanities, School of Textile and Clothing Engineering, School of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, and School of Medicine are the university’s most visibly distinguished schools.
The original Soochow University was founded by Methodists in Suzhou in 1900 as a merger of three existing institutions: the Po-hsi Academy, the Kung-hsiang Academy, and the Chung-hsi Academy. The university was split in 1949 as a result of the Chinese Civil War, and merged with the Southern Jiangsu College of Culture and Education and the Department of Mathematics and Physics at Jiangnan University to form the Jiangsu Teacher’s College in 1952. The English name Soochow University was revived in 1982; however, the original Chinese name Dongwu was not adopted, and the institution was given the name Suzhou. The Suzhou College of Sericulture, Suzhou Institute of Silk Textile Technology and Suzhou Medical College were each merged into the University in 1995, 1997 and 2000 successively.
- Discipline and programs
Through more than 100 years of development, Soochow University has developed into an open, comprehensive and research-oriented university, combining disciplines in liberal arts, math, society, costume, science, business, law, material and chemistry, electronic information, education, mechanical and electrical engineering, media, engineering, economics, management, language, medical science, computer, architecture, environment, sports etc. Doctoral programs are available in 167 fields, 29 postdoctoral stations, master’s programs in 244 fields and bachelor programs in 113 subjects.
- Academic facilities and scientific research
The university has now about 50,000 students, including 12,744 postgraduates, 22,853 undergraduates and 9,010 adult education students. Among its 4098 faculty and staff members, four are full-time employed academicians (including one member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences who is also a member of the Third-World Academy of Sciences and three members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering), six are part-time employed academicians and 1,633 are full professors and associate professors.
Soochow University attaches great importance on teaching and research, and there are an average of about 40 students receives national level and above awards every year. In the twenty-ninth session of the Beijing Olympic Games, the players of Soochow University won two gold and one bronze medals. In the 16th Guangzhou Asian Games, a total of more than 10 students of the school was selected as the Chinese sports delegation, participated in the game of Taekwondo, athletics, handball and other projects, won 3 gold medals, 1 silver medal.
In 2010, Soochow University implements science and technology innovation strategy and achieved fruitful results. Its chemistry, physics, materials science, clinical medicine, engineering, and other disciplines rank into the world’s top 1% of ESI. At the deadline of 2012, the university has had access to 276 national projects in the field of Natural Science, including 265 National Natural Science Foundation projects and 19 national major projects. And the number of National Natural Science Foundation projects ranks the top 20 of universities in China.
