|English.Study of Chinese language compulsory in the 1st year which can be extended or as applicable as per the university norms. This is for facilitating effective interaction during clinical period and comfortable stay. Passing of the HSK (Chinese) is mandatory. HSK level as per the University requirement.||Degree Conferred as: MBBS|
Duration: 5 years Studies and 1 year Internship. Internship may be done either in the university or in the home country as per the home country government rules and regulations.

Graduates from HMU are now working in over 10 different countries and regions including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Statistics from 22 county-level comprehensive hospitals show that over 70 % of the hospital directors are the graduates from HMU, and 60% of the professionals and technical personnel in the medical departments and academic leading positions in the primary health units of Hainan province are the graduates from HMU. Currently, the total enrollment at present is over 14,000 students, including 8,925 full-time students, and 116 overseas students.
The current Hainan Medical University was created in 1993 with the approval of the central government. In 1951, two private medical colleges were merged to form the Hainan Specialized Medical School. These two colleges were Haiqiang Medical Vocational School created in 1947 and the Medical College of Hainan University established in 1948. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, this school was restructured as the Hainan Medical Vocational School and later became the Medical Department of Hainan University. In 1993, the college became the Hainan Medical College to reflect its specialization in medicine. In 1994, Hainan Medical College was accredited to offer bachelor’s degrees and in 1996 was accredited for undergraduate education by the Ministry of Education. In 2000, the College established a new campus on Chengxi Road. HMU has 4 affiliated hospitals and 84 teaching (practicing) bases including the General Hospital of Chinese People’s Liberation Army, the First and Second Affiliated Hospitals of Sun Yat-sen University, Xiangya Hospital of Central-south University and West China Hospital of Sichuan University.
- Discipline and Programs
Offers various bachelor degree education program in 26 specialties in the disciplines of medical science, science, and management. HMU has also three-year medical program in 21 majors. Particularly, the university offered overseas education with majors including Clinical Medicine, Dental medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Preventive medicine, pharmacy and Nursing. Several HMU disciplines are ranked as national level specialty such Clinical Medicine; Pharmacology and many more at provincial level. The key discipline in Traditional Chinese Medicine under the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine: Hepatobiliary Diseases with TCM.
The present staff number of HMU is 2,472, with 510 professors and specialists. 73% of the 514 full-time teachers hold master’s or doctor’s degrees, and 57 of them are professors, 126 are associate professors. The total enrollment at present is over 20,100 students, including 10,984 full-time students, and 344 overseas students.
- Academic Facilities and Scientific Research
Hainan Medical University (HMU) covers an area of 420,000 square meters. HMU has 4 affiliated hospitals and 84 teaching (practicing) bases including the General Hospital of Chinese People’s Liberation Army, the First and Second Affiliated Hospitals of Sun Yat-sen University, Xiangya Hospital of Central-south University and West China Hospital of Sichuan University. In terms of research centers, HMU has several research centers and laboratories both at provincial and national level such as National Demonstration Center for Laboratory Teaching: Clinical Skills Training Center of Hainan province, and Hainan provincial Demonstration Center for Laboratory Teaching; National Base of Education and Training: Training Center for General Medicine of Hainan province, and Hainan Provincial General Medical Practitioner Training Center; National Base for Science Popularization: Hainan Provincial Science and Technology Hall of Human Life.
HMU has famous Provincial level key laboratories: Key Laboratory of Tropical Diseases in Hainan Province; Key Laboratory of Research and Development of Tropical Medicinal Plants in Hainan Province; Key Laboratory of Preclinical Pharmacological and Toxicological Research of Drugs in Hainan Province; Key Laboratory of Human Reproduction and Genetics in Hainan Province (in preparation); Key Laboratory of Tumor Intervention and Occurrence in Hainan Province (in preparation).
- Great Achievement
Over the past 5 years, Hainan Medical University has won 30 provincial Sci-tech achievement awards. 224 papers have been cited by SCI, EI, STP, 47 academic books have been published and 58 textbooks have been compiled. Up to now, the university has conducted 37 natural sciences research projects. In the last few years many of HMU has won several prizes including the first prize in the South China region and second prize in the national finals for the second national medical college students’ clinical skill contest, Golden Bridge prize. In 2009, the Dai ethnic group dance huayaohua won the first prize of the non-professional group in the second national college students’ art exhibition. The university has been awarded such honorary titles as “Unit for Advancement in Employment Rate of Graduates from National Institutions of Higher Learning”, and “Unit for Excellency in Employment Rate of Graduates from Institutions of Higher Learning in Hainan province”, etc.
Over the past three years, the employment rate of graduates from HMU has ranked among the top in Hainan province. Over the past years, the passing rate of the Nurse License and Doctor License Qualification Test has reached 100%, “zero distance” employment rate has reached 90%, the rate of first-time employment of its graduates is over 95%, annual employment rate is 100%, and over 95% of the employers have been satisfied with its graduates.
